Relentless heavy rainfall in the southern state of Kerala has resulted in a flood-like situation, prompting authorities to shut schools in several districts of Tamil Nadu. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Pathanamthitta in Kerala, indicating the likelihood of heavy to extremely heavy rains exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours. Landslides have been reported in Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts, affecting high ranges and low-lying areas.
Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city, witnessed a staggering 15 centimetres of rainfall, leading to waterlogging and traffic disruptions. In response to rising water levels, authorities opened the shutters of Kallarkutty and Pambla dams in Idukki districts, with reports of widespread damage to agriculture and properties in Thiruvalla and Konni areas.
The heavy rainfall has also affected several districts in Tamil Nadu, prompting officials to declare holidays in schools across eight districts, including Tenkasi, Viruthunagar, Pudhukottai, Nilgiri, Theni, Thirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and Thoothukudi. The Chennai meteorological department forecasts heavy to very heavy rain in various Tamil Nadu districts, including Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Dindigul, Sivagangai, and Pudukottai. Thunderstorms with moderate rain are expected in several other districts. The situation has led to concerns about potential damage to infrastructure, agriculture, and disruptions in normal life, emphasizing the need for continued monitoring and preparedness.
